Autumn Meridians - Lungs, Spleen, Kidneys + New Immune Support Package

It's been a difficult time emotionally for so many of my friends and patients, and of course those even closer to violence around the globe. So many of you have shared how this moment is personally affecting you. While the scope of my practice may be centered on individual healing, it is crucial to acknowledge the interconnectedness of global events and their influence on our emotional and physical bodies. Before I decided to become an acupuncturist, I wanted to work in some way in social justice or international peace efforts. I learned that while my values align with these efforts, my sense of purpose and satisfaction would be better served working in a setting where I could see positive change on a daily basis. I am committed to being a positive force in this world one person at a time, and it is an honor to serve you and to hold space for all that you share in our sessions together.

Supporting the Lungs, Spleen and Kidney Qi During Autumn

My mother's book club recently read "Lady Tan's Circle of Women" by Lisa See. This historical novel is based on the true story of a woman physician in 15th century China. Every few days my mom would send me an email asking about the relevance of certain terms today - "Do you still use the concepts of yin and yang in your practice?" "Do you know the difference between blood and Blood?" "Do you talk about qi with your patients?" It was fun to answer my mother's questions and for the most part the concepts and terms in this book are very much relevant today. But in discussing this book with my mother, I realized that I don't often share the traditional terms and concepts with my patients. Sometimes I get so focused on translating Western medicine to my patients that I forget to share the beautiful and metaphorical basis for the medicine that I practice.

During this fall season, I'm going back to the roots of East Asian Medicine (EAM, also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM) and highlighting the dynamic trio of organs that contribute to healthy immune system - the Lungs, Spleen and Kidneys. Each organ system encompasses roles beyond those of our western biomedical understanding. We use the Lung, Spleen and Kidney meridians together to maintain a healthy immune system. Additionally, the Lung system helps us to process grief, the Spleen system helps us to focus and to discern our priorities and the Kidney system represents our bank account of deep energy reserves, our "well". Acupuncture points along each meridian (Lung meridian, Spleen meridian and Kidney meridian) strengthens the immune system to help prevent illness or fight off illness more efficiently. Acupuncture can help resolve lingering coughs and restore mental and physical energy after a cold or flu. Acupuncture, cupping and herbs are helpful companions during cold and flu season!
